Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Wins Car Magazine's Performance Car Of The Year

Sunday, 22 November 2009 |

PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo)

NORTHAMPTON - October 8, 2008: The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 has been named the ultimate Performance Car of The Year 2008 in CAR magazine’s annual test.

In the November issue of CAR, on sale now, the judges put the competitors through their paces on both road and track. The Gallardo LP 560-4 beat contenders in its supercar group including the Porsche 911 GT2, Aston Martin DBS and Mercedes-Benz CLK Black. It then went on to win the overall competition against finalists from seven other categories, including challengers such as the Nissan GT-R, Mitsubishi Evo 360 and MINI John Cooper Works.

“The CAR test is unique among such awards in that it focuses more on emotion than science. The magazine bases its decision on the way cars stir the soul rather than simply how fast they are or how well they handle. All the finalists are good performers, but only one outshone the others to deliver on everything it promises,“ said CAR editor Phil McNamara.

“The Gallardo LP 560-4 is a special car to see, to drive and, we bet, to own and that’s why it’s our Performance Car of The Year,” was CAR magazine’s final judgement.“

The Gallardo LP 560-4 was unveiled earlier this year as Lamborghini’s replacement for its original Gallardo, of which approximately 7100 models have been delivered since its first launch in 2003.

Nissan Skyline GTR

|

The Nissan Skyline GT-R is an iconic Japanese sports coupe in the Nissan Skyline range. Dubbed "Godzilla" by Wheels magazine in Australia when released there in 1989, it was rated by many motoring magazines, including the well-respected Wheels, as providing performance and handling equal or superior to that of European icons like the Porsche 911 and the Ferrari Testarossa, at a considerably lower price. The Skyline's home-market competitors have included the Honda NSX, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Subaru Impreza WRX STi, and Mazda RX-7.

History of the brand

The Skyline name originated with the Prince automobile company which developed and sold the Skyline line of sedans before merging with Nissan-Datsun. The earliest predecessor of the GT-R, the S54 2000 GT-B, came second in its first race in 1964 to the purpose-built Porsche 904 GTS race car. The next development of the GT-R, the 4-door PGC10 2000 GT-R , later to be superceeded by the 2-door KPGC10 version, scored 33 victories in the one and a half years it raced and by the time it attempted its 50th consecutive win, its run was ended by a Mazda Savanna RX-3. The car took 54 victories by the time it was discontinued in 1972. The last of the original GT-Rs, the KPGC110 2000GT-R, used an unchanged S20 160 hp (120 kW) inline-6 engine from the earlier 2000 GT-R and only sold 197 units due to the worldwide energy crisis. This model was the only GT-R to never participate in a race despite only having one built which now resides in Nissan's former factory turned storage unit for historical cars in Zuma.

The Skyline model continued into the 1990s when it became popular largely because it remained rear wheel drive, while most other manufacturers' models were front wheel drive (which had certain complexities inherent in achieving high performance in power or handling when compared to a rear-wheel drive car).

Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec II

Models

After a 16 year hiatus, from the KPGC110 Skyline GT-R of 1973, the GT-R version of the Skyline was reintroduced with the eighth generation Skyline R32 in 1989. The GT-R became the flagship of Nissan performance, showcasing many advanced technologies, including the ATTESA-ETS system (a hydraulic on-demand four-wheel drive) and Super-HICAS (four-wheel steering). The 1989- GT-Rs remained (relatively) cheap, with a list-price of ¥ 4.5 million (about US$ 31,000).

GT-R Skylines of the 1990s progressed from the R32 (1989), through to the R34 (1998). Production of the GT-R ceased in August 2002. Although Nissan continued the Skyline name with the release of the Infiniti G35 (sold as the Nissan Vitesse/Skyline in Japan), a new GT-R has not yet been released. Throughout its lifetime, various special editions, containing additional performance-enhancing modifications, were released by Nissan and its performance division Nismo.

R32 Nismo, N1, and V-Spec

Total production of the R32 GT-R was 43,394 units, with production starting on May 22, 1989 and ending in October 1994, which actually overlapped the release of the R33 Skyline by nearly a year. Four special editions were produced.

The Nismo GT-R was introduced in February 22, 1990, and had a total production of 560 units. It was used to homologate a number of changes to the original GT-R for Group A racing. These included additional ducts in the front bumper to improve airflow to the intercooler, a bonnet lip spoiler to direct more air into the engine bay, and an additional boot lip spoiler to reduce drag and provide more downforce.

The N1 GT-R was introduced on July 19, 1991, and had a total production of only 228 units. N1 cars were produced to compete in Group N racing, and included the Nismo aero kit; but also, to improve the cars reliability during endurance events, an upgraded engine block, higher flow oil and water pumps, and more reliable ball-bearing turbo-chargers. The GT-R's 16" wheels were replaced by 17"x8 wheels with 225/50/17 tires. N1 GT-Rs were made lighter (1470 kg) by removing the ABS, rear wiper, air-conditioner and radio, and installing lighter headlights. All N1 cars were painted in color code 326 (Crystal White). The list price of the N1 was ¥ 5 million.

To celebrate the success of the GT-R in both N1 and Group A racing, Nissan introduced the V-Spec ("Victory Specification") car on February 3, 1993. The V-Spec added Brembo brakes and a retuned ATTESA-ETS system to the Nismo package, as well as 17" BBS wheels with 235/45/17 tires. The V-Spec had a list price of ¥ 5.260 million. N1 cars were then based on the V-Spec.

Finally on February 14, 1994 the V-Spec II was released, the only change to the V-Spec being wider 245/45/17 tires. Total production of the V-Spec I and II was 1,453 and 1,303 units respectively.

Nismo R34 Z-Tune

On 14 January 2005, Nismo resurrected the R34 GT-R for one last tour of duty before the introduction of the anticipated next generation GT-R. Labeled as the R34 Z-tune, the Nismo engineers made the car the most powerful road-going GT-R ever created. Using rebuilt R34s with much technology borrowed from the GT500 Racing GT-Rs and endurance racing GT-Rs, the Z-tune has a 2.8 L twin turbo instead of the stock 2.6 L engine, racing pistons, connecting rods and camshafts, and an upgraded ECU, giving the Z-tune 500 hp (370 kW) and 540 N·m (400 lb·ft) of torque. The car became affectionately known as the "Mother of all GT-Rs" and is carries a price tag of about US$ 170,000. Nismo has stated that this car will be a limited edition, and only 20 will ever be made and sold.

Power-train

The GT-R of the 1990s included a 2.6 L straight six-cylinder twin-turbo motor producing 206 kW (276 hp). The turbo-chargers were of a hybrid steel/ceramic design allowing them to spool up faster due to the light nature of the ceramic exhaust wheel.

Power was delivered to all four wheels using an electronically-controlled all wheel drive system referred to by Nissan as the ATTESA-ETS system. The ATTESA-ETS system uses two G-Sensors mounted underneath the centre console, which feed lateral and longtitudinal inputs to the ECU. The ECU would then control the feed of power by allowing a limited amount to be delivered to the front wheels via an electronic torque split converter. V-Spec models were equipped with (amongst other things), a faster reacting ATTESA-ETS Pro four-wheel drive system with adjusted ECU settings, improving oversteer considerably.

The car also had computer-controlled all wheel steering system referred to as HICAS. The HICAS system activated when the vehicle exceeded 80 km/h and controlled the steering of the rear wheels in the same direction as the front to improve turn in on entry to corners.

While the published figures from Nissan were as quoted above, practical tests showed the car had a factory power output of closer to 220 kW at the flywheel. The lower published figure was Nissan's response to the need to abide by a gentleman's agreement between the Japanese auto manufacturers not to release a car to the public exceeding 206 kW of power output.

Modification

The Skyline GT-R is a popular target for modification due to the strength of the RB26DETT engine. This engine, common to all GT-Rs, is widely considered as one of the most durable engines when heavily modified. Many aftermarket suppliers have produced "bolt on" upgrade kits for the GT-R to boost power output beyond the factory specification.

The ceramic turbochargers that are equipped from the factory, are set to make 7psi of boost pressure (0.5bar). Being ceramic, they are not as durable as a steel turbine would be. Most owners limit their boost to 14psi of boost, as they are prone to shattering at high heat conditions when past 14 psi. A common upgrade for the turbocharger is the N1 turbo. It is equpped on the RB26DETT-N1 version of the Skyline GT-R engine, intended for motorsports. It is capable of much higher power than the standard turbochargers.

Without making upgrades to the mechanical parts of the engine, it is commonly believed that the engine can handle around 500 hp. After this level of power, it is most important to upgrade the oil system of the engine. The factory oil-pump is not capable of properly lubricating the engine at higher power levels. After that, most owners upgrade the pistons, and connecting rods. As well as the bolts that secure the cylinder head, and connecting rods.

Some tuning garages in Japan, UK, and Australia, have managed to upgrade the RB26DETT to power levels past 1000hp. Veilside, in Japan, has modified an R34 Skyline GTR to 1600hp. They have also modified an R32 Skyline GTR to accelerate to 300kmh in 20 secs

Motorsport History

The GT-R's success in motor racing was formidable, particularly in the annual 1,000 km race at the Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst, Australia, where the champion in 1991 and 1992 was a GT-R (despite receiving additional 100 kg in weight penalties and a turbo pop off valve in 1992 due to its unbeatable performance), and in the Japanese GT series where it has remained dominant up to the present day.

No other race victories by the GT-R could escape without controversies, at the 1990 Macau Grand Prix Guia touring car race, the factory backed R32 driven by Masahiro Hasemi led the race from the start to the finishing line which caused a wave of protests by the European entrants. The following year, the car was forced to carry a weight penalty of 140 kg and finished in fourth place. The GT-R's success at Mount Panorama in 1991 and 1992, both by Jim Richards, led to a change in formula regulations, which came to exclude turbocharged and four-wheel-drive cars in subsequent years. It also led indirectly to a move to the Super Touring Car category in the JTCC and the creation of the JGTC grand touring car series in Japan, where GT-Rs can only compete in rear-wheel drive form.

In the UK Andy Middlehurst took the Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) to two consecutive championship wins in the National Saloon Car Cup. Other championship titles include the 1993 Spanish Touring Car Championship.

Mercedes-Benz' SLR McLaren 722 GT

|

Its official! The Mercedes-Benz' SLR McLaren 722 GT is now available exclusively at RENNtech.

AMG Market News/RENNtech PR/Lake Park, FL - DEC. 2007: While Mercedes' ultra-exclusive SLR McLaren 722 GT track car has been making rounds in the motoring press for several weeks now, a few key questions remained unanswered - including "How much?" and "Where can I get one?"

We can answer the "How much?" question rather easily (795,000 €, or about 1.2 million USD), it's the "Where can I get one?" question that's more interesting.

SLR McLaren 722 GT Mercedes-BenzAs of Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT will be made available to the North American market exclusively through RENNtech, the Florida-based MB tuning house owned and operated by super-tuner Hartmut Feyhl, who also lists "technical director, AMG North America" on his resume. "It's been a very exciting project to be involved in," explains Feyhl.

Similar in concept to Ferrari's Enzo FXX program, the 722 GT is built specifically for track use by renowned British motorsports specialists at the RML Group to be the fastest possible on a track. The SLR 722 GT offers impressive power and cornering and delivers exactly the kind of motorsports experience one would expect from a competition car - and, with only 21 examples of the hyper-exclusive track cars being offered for sale, driving one is sure be a special occasion.

RENNtech will be organizing several on-track events (to be announced) throughout the US, beginning in 2008.

The SLR 722 GT trackcars will be set-up and maintained by RENNtech, which will have specially trained technicians and engineers on hand at each of the planned on-track events, which will follow a format similar to the SLR.Club SAFETY & SPEED ACADEMY track weekends in Europe. Participating customers will receive a mix of on and off-track instruction by trained instructors and professional drivers (including Jochen Mass, David Coulthard, and others), as well as some track time in RENNtech's Aixro SLR.Karts - to get a good feel for each track before going out in their SLRs.

Feyhl explained that the concept is to deliver to SLR McLaren customers a true and authentic motorsports experience in a competitive and reasonably safe environment.

SLR McLaren 722 GT Mercedes-Benz

If it is RENNtech and Mercedes' goal to deliver "an authentic experience", the SLR McLaren 722 GT is a great place to start - compared to the road-going SLR, the 722 GT gets the full FIA GT treatment from RML: more than 400 redesigned components, FIA spec. safety equipment, fully adjustable suspension, full-on competition brake hardware, a no-nonsense interior, and a track-only exhaust system that bumps the 722 GT's output to well over 670 hp. The real game-changers, however, are the 722 GT's towering rear wing and drastically reduced weight. At 1390 kg, the 722 GT weighs some six-hundred pounds less (!) than the stock 722, and the rear wing (in conjunction with the car's front splitter) provide more than enough aerodynamic downforce to tackle the fastest turns with confidence.

The 722 GT also benefits from years of wind-tunnel and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) experience at RML and McLaren, making the wings and body mods much more than an aesthetic package. Everything on the car, every vent and louvre, is fully functional - a terrific enhancement to on-track performance.

With more power, less weight, and dramatically improved handling, the limited-edition Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT, one thing is certain: if you love cars, love racing, and have the money (but not the time) to campaign a full-on race series, the 722 GT is your ticket.

The BMW 118d Coupé’s low CO2 emissions figure means it sits within the lowest benefit-in-kind tier of 13 per cent and its annual Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rate is just £35. No competitor vehicle can match the BMW 118d Coupé in terms of company car taxation and VED, while the 120i Coupé also enjoys a class-leading CO2 emissions position.

Prices for the BMW 118d Coupé start at £20,500 OTR for an ES model rising to £23,375 OTR for an M Sport variant. The 120i Coupé starts at £21,115 OTR for an ES rising to £23,990 OTR for an M Sport. Both new engine derivatives go on sale 1 September.

Details of the new engines come as a Sport specification has been added to the line-up of the BMW 1 Series Coupé and Convertible models. Following on from the 1 Series three- and five-door models, Sport specification is available on all four-cylinder-engined cars. The standard specification includes 17-inch Star-spoke light alloy wheels, front foglights, heated exterior mirrors and windscreen washer jets, Network cloth upholstery, Sport multi-function leather steering wheel and Sport seats. All Sport models are priced at the equivalent ES price and offer customers £1,075 of added value.

The new BMW 740d
BMW’s 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine is now available in the marque’s flagship model range. The new BMW 740d comes powered by a 306hp six-cylinder engine capable of propelling the vehicle from zero to 62mph in 6.3 seconds before going on to an electronically-limited 155mph top speed. Such performance also appeals to the financially minded courtesy of a combined consumption figure of 40.9mpg and CO2 emissions of just 181g/km.

The BMW 740d is available in standard-wheelbase only with specification highlights including glass sunroof, lane departure warning system, speed limit display and lumbar support for driver and front passenger. The BMW 740d is on sale now priced from £60,265 OTR.

Revised BMW 6 Series for September
The BMW 6 Series range has been refreshed for September with a restructuring of the model line-up and an across the board standard specification enhancement. Now all engine derivatives will be offered in SE, Sport or M specification . Every model will come with BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation, BMW Professional radio, BMW ConnectedDrive Online and Assist functions, Bluetooth telephone preparation, USB audio interface and Voice control system.

BMW’s Service Inclusive package that provides added peace of mind motoring for five years or 60,000 miles will also be standard on all 6 Series models (except M derivatives). Prices for the range start at £53,710 OTR for the 630i SE Coupé and £59,400 OTR for a 630i SE Convertible.

BMW 730d and 730Ld enhanced as M Sport specification comes to 7 Series range
The most fuel efficient and cleanest conventionally powered luxury car has reinforced its green credentials with the introduction of a revised engine. The new BMW 730d and 730Ld now come with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine that features enhancements to the fuelling system for greater efficiency.

The BMW 730d now returns 41.5mpg on the combined cycle compared to 39.2mpg while the BMW 730Ld records 40.9mpg against 38.7mpg. CO2 emissions also improve with the 730d dropping from 192g/km to 178g/km and the 730Ld now recording 180g/km opposed to 194g/km. These statistics mean both models drop to VED band ‘I’ and are thus cheaper to tax. The vehicles also qualify for a lower benefit-in-kind rating (26 per cent and 27 per cent) representing an even more compelling proposition for the business user.

The latest BMW 730d goes on sale in September from £53,695 OTR with the 730Ld costing £56,755 OTR.

Revisions to the most popular derivative of 7 Series come as M Sport specification is available on the model for the first time in its 32-year history. M Sport is offered on every incarnation of 7 Series and comprises M Aerodynamic body styling, 19-inch M light alloy wheels with the option to upgrade to differently styled 20-inch alloy wheels, Dynamic Drive and High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim. Inside, and Sport seats, M Sport steering wheel, door sill finishers with M designation and Anthracite headlining are standard.

Prices for M Sport models start with a BMW 730d M Sport at £58,750 OTR rising to the BMW 760Li M Sport at £96,590 OTR.

2009 audi a3 euro spec thumb Audi Q7, A3 Earn Top Honors in Strategic Vision Total Value Index®

The Audi Q7 earned recognition as the best luxury SUV and the Audi A3 claimed the top ranking among luxury multi-function vehicles in the just-released 2008 Total Value Index® produced by the consumer research firm Strategic Vision. The annual Total Value Index blends what consumers say about their vehicles (in terms of expected reliability, expected fuel economy, price paid and expected resale value) with various ownership measures calculated by Strategic Vision. In determining the 2008 Index scores, the San Diego-based research firm found clear evidence that consumers are looking for the best pricing along with quality cues that would indicate a vehicle’s long-term value.
“These results reinforce the market’s shift toward experiences Audi offers in terms of performance and technology, luxurious features and efficiency,” said Audi of America Inc. Executive Vice President Johan de Nysschen. “We believe the long-term value of owning Audi models will be a difference maker as these economic times lead consumers to rethink their luxury-vehicle options.”

Strategic Vision noted that consumers are giving greater scrutiny to their vehicles, which it said opens up opportunities. “When economic conditions become more favorable, the manufacturers who have focused their efforts in enhancing product quality and communicating messages of trustworthy products and overall value will be in a position to regain, and even take over new, market share,” said Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision’s automotive division.

In the Total Value Index’s luxury SUV segment, the Audi Q7 outpaced recent winners in the category – the Mercedes-Benz GL and ML models, the Lexus GX 470 and the BMW X5 – on the basis of standard equipment, technical innovations and affordability in its class. In the luxury multi-function category, Audi claimed the top two positions with the A3 followed closely by the A4/S4 Avant models. Strategic Vision touted the A3 for its standard equipment, innovation and pricing.
